This has a Roy Of The Rovers story attached to this and shows why we are football fans. It was Ipswich away in 1991, the last but one game of the season and we needed to win, but we lost. I left Portman Road thinking that in all probability we would be relegated the following week when we played Oxford. I wandered around Ipswich for half hour in a bit of a daze before returning to the Portman Road where the players were boarding the coach. I spoke to Gary Mills and told him we were down, to which he replied in a positive way that there was one game left. He still insisted we would be okay and there was no need to worry. Just as he boarded the coach I cheekily asked for his shirt, for which he said he would give me before the Oxford game.
The following week I got to the game early to see Gary cross the car park with a bag in his hand, which he handed to me, which contained this shirt. I put it on, went into the game, which we needed to win to stay up, along with relying on other results. Tony James scored, Bristol Rovers beat West Brom and we had managed to stay up. At the final whistle the crowd invaded the pitch and as the players tried to make their way to the tunnel, Gary grabbed my shirt, kissed the badge and said "I told you not to worry" True story and I have collected shirts ever since. This is my favourite shirt of the whole collection.
